A Reason for the Warning

Colla slowly made her way back to the library where she had left Father Brogan. She wondered if she could possibly return to their conversation when her heart was broken for missing Beiste. It would surely show in her face and her demeanor. The good priest had sharp eyes and she knew he would not miss anything.

It was wonderful to have seen Beiste now. Now, with him departed, can I return to life as normal?

“Forgive me, Father Brogan,” she said, coming back into the room. She kept her eyes on the floor so she did not have to look at the priest.

“That is me job…” he replied with a chuckle. “All I seem to do, most days.”

It made her laugh as well. It was good to see that gentle humor. There was a comfort in his words, a comfort that she needed.

“Were ye able to take care of the matter that took ye from me so abruptly?” he asked knowingly. His words were not unkind.

Colla tried to hide the tears that were pooling in her eyes. “Aye, Father, I did,” she said, looking away again.

“Lass, remember that lying to a priest is extra sinful,” he said with the same lightheartedness. His concern was touching.

She looked at him with a small smile. “I suppose I am worried for the safety of a friend. Me friend has a long journey to make, and not a safe one. Especially not in these times. But I ken that God has a way?” she asked, hoping for the comforting confirmation from Father Brogan.

“Aye lass, He has a way and He has purposes. So dinnae ye worry. I pray your friend makes it back to safety.”

“I too, Father,” she said sincerely.

They were silent a while.

“Should we talk more?” the priest asked carefully.

Colla frowned. “I'd like to talk. But about something else,” she said carefully. “I want to forget all about...this.” she made a gesture that included the garden, Beiste, everything.

“Aye lass. What should I talk to ye about then?” he asked softly.

“Tell me about the man ye travel with. The earl and his son,” she replied. It was the only thing she knew about Father Brogan, aside from his profession.

“What would ye like to know?” he inquired.

Colla realized she didn’t have an answer. She didn’t want to offend the priest by admitting that she knew of nothing else to ask him. “I'm just curious,” she said lightly.

“Then I will tell ye a little,” he said.

“That will do just fine,” Colla replied. The priest’s demeanor changed a bit. She felt that she was in for a story.

“Ye should ken that as a priest, I keep all confessions to meself,” he said carefully. “But confessions are not the same as character…”

There was a discomfort in his words that Colla could sense, but she didn’t know why. “Yes…I think I understand,” Colla replied. She felt quite hesitant to learn more. She wished now that she hadn't asked about the Earl of Strathford.

There was darkness in Father Brogan’s eyes.
